Walk to the Lighthouse Returns for a Sixth Year on September 27

The Walk to the Lighthouse is back at the Joseph Brant Hospital parking lot on Sunday, September 27, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. It is the sixth year for the walk, and registration is free.

A five kilometre route is the centre of the afternoon. Around it there is entertainment, a silent auction and an area set aside for kids, so families can stay after the walking is done. Signing up ahead of time is done on the event's own site.

Every dollar raised goes to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation's For All Minds campaign, which is paying for the hospital's rebuilt mental health and addictions services. That includes a new inpatient unit with a psychiatric intensive care unit inside the North Tower, an outpatient unit placed alongside it, and a child and youth mental health day hospital.

The walk is organized by a volunteer committee rather than the hospital. The group says its aim is to reduce the stigma around mental illness and addiction, so that fewer people put off asking for treatment.
