Burlington Skyway Rehabilitation Finished on the Niagara-Bound Lanes
Trips toward Hamilton and Niagara should move better from here. A Ministry of Transportation contractor has finished rehabilitating the Niagara-bound half of the Burlington Skyway, ending roughly two years of temporary lane closures that began in spring 2024.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced the completion on October 20, calling it a nearly $48 million investment covering bridge repairs, new paving, better drainage and an additional lane approaching the bridge. Steve Vieira, director of contractor Alliance Verdi Civil, said the company finished the Niagara-bound project on schedule and within budget.
The full scope ran longer than the announcement. Crews removed and replaced the concrete barrier walls on both sides of the Niagara-bound bridge, repaired the concrete deck, waterproofed it and improved drainage before repaving. The QEW was widened by one lane from north of Northshore Boulevard up to the bridge, with the on-ramp realigned to match. The work also added new overhead sign structures, illumination upgrades and a new Burlington Lift Bridge notification system with variable message signs.
The other half has no date
The second phase, rehabilitating the Toronto-bound side, has not been advertised for tender. "Nor do we have any information for the planned project," Vieira said in an email, adding that the company would bid if the work goes out. A City of Burlington spokesperson said that as of October 22 the city had not been advised of further Ministry of Transportation work on the Skyway, and ministry staff declined to give a schedule, saying any future rehabilitation would be delivered through separate projects.
Two bridges, not one
The Skyway is a twin span. The current Toronto-bound structure opened in 1958 and carried traffic in both directions until the Niagara-bound side opened in 1985. Project details are posted on the Burlington Skyway project site and on the Province of Ontario page.
