Two Small Earthquakes Recorded East of Burlington

The bang that woke parts of Burlington in the middle of the week has an explanation. Earthquakes Canada recorded two small earthquakes about seven kilometres east of the city, a few hours apart.

The first, a magnitude 1.4, was logged at 10:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13. A magnitude 1.5 followed at 1:13 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Both sat about five kilometres below the surface, and the federal agency lists both as felt rather than instrument-only.

People close to the epicentre described a loud bang or a noise closer to a sonic boom than any real shaking. No damage was reported from either tremor.

Quakes this small do turn up in southern Ontario from time to time, and Earthquakes Canada keeps a running list of seismic events for the region. Most pass without anyone noticing, which is what makes a pair of felt reports in one night worth the attention.

Felt it?

Earthquakes Canada asks anyone who felt a tremor to fill in its Did you feel it questionnaire. Reports from residents are what map how far a quake carried, and the agency's earthquake FAQ answers the usual questions about magnitude and depth.
