New Street Bridge at Tuck Creek Still Set to Finish This Year

Drivers have been squeezing through one lane each way on New Street at Tuck Creek all year. City staff say the bridge replacement is still on track to finish before the end of 2026, which would put both lanes back in each direction.

The hold-up was what a city spokesperson described as an unforeseen underground utility conflict, which forced a pause to the water main phase of construction. That issue has been resolved and work is expected to resume within two or three weeks. The earlier stages of the bridge work had finished ahead of schedule before the stop.

The job is bigger than the bridge deck. The contract went to Decew Construction Inc. of Hamilton in June 2025 for $5,861,310.01, and the bridge replacement is one piece of a wider Tuck Creek flood mitigation project that also covers culvert upgrades, creek channel improvements and water main and storm sewer replacement. Utility relocation moved Bell, hydro and water lines around the new, wider bridge.

Part of what makes the schedule tight is the creek itself. In-water work is restricted from September 15 to June 30 in each construction year to limit disruption to local fish.

A new project update notice is expected in the next couple of weeks and gets posted to the project page. The last one went out in July.
