Burlington Mayoral Debate Set for September 17 at St. Christopher's Church
Burlington voters get to see the mayoral candidates in one room on September 17 at St. Christopher's Church. Three people have declared so far: Ward 2 councillor Lisa Kearns, Ward 3 councillor Rory Nisan, and incumbent Marianne Meed Ward.
The debate nearly did not happen. Groups like the Chamber of Commerce have hosted this kind of forum in past election years, and this year nobody volunteered. The Burlington Men's Shed organized it themselves once it was clear no one else would. President Ron Smith told BurlingtonToday the group saw an opening and decided that if nobody was going to do it, they would.
Nisan has confirmed with BurlingtonToday that he plans to attend, and organizers say Kearns is confirmed as well. Meed Ward has not said yet.
The evening starts before the debate does. Close to 20 candidates running for council seats are invited to set up tables and displays to meet voters first. The debate portion begins at 7:15 p.m., moderated by Rishia Burke of Community Development Halton.
