Burlington Parks Are Getting 20 Free Sports Equipment Lockers This Month
Burlington is putting free sports equipment in city parks this month. Twenty self-serve stations will hold basketballs, soccer balls, frisbees and other gear, and anyone can borrow a piece using the Equip Sport mobile app.
Each station has three lockers with one item in each, so 60 pieces of equipment will be spread across the city. A session lasts up to an hour, though it can be ended early or extended, and the company says the average borrow runs about 40 minutes. The app asks users to photograph the station before and after use.
The city is not paying for any of it. Canadian Tire Jumpstart funds the program, Sport Chek supplies the gear, and Equip Sport handles installation, maintenance and day to day operation. A city staff report says the pilot arrives at no capital, operating or maintenance cost to Burlington.
It runs as a 12-month pilot, and usage data gets reviewed at the end of the term before anyone decides whether it carries on. Jumpstart has close to 400 lockers in 13 municipalities so far, Brampton and Mississauga among them.
