Burlington Wants to Hear How Construction Noise Affects Your Street

If an excavator has been waking your street at seven in the morning, the city is asking about exactly that. Burlington is reviewing its Noise and Nuisance Control By-law and collecting residents' experiences of construction in their neighbourhoods, after council directed staff to take another look at permitted construction hours.

As the rules stand, construction is allowed from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and is prohibited on Sundays and statutory holidays unless the city grants an exemption. When an exemption is approved, the applicant has to notify every residence within 150 metres of the site.

Worth knowing before you fill anything in: the bylaw does not cover several of the things people complain about most. Backup beeping on construction vehicles, honking, workers calling to each other on site and traffic delays around a project all sit outside what the bylaw regulates.

Three ways to weigh in

The online survey is open until November 30. An in-person session runs November 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Alton Community Centre, with the staff presentation at 6:45 pm. A virtual session runs November 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and a recording goes up afterwards.

The city is also asking the construction industry what any change to the hours would do to project timelines and costs, so the feedback is being weighed against that. Everything collected goes to council in a staff recommendation report in the first quarter of 2027.

The survey and the meeting details are on the project page. Hours set in 2003 are the ones your street is living with until this review changes them.
