Four Art Exhibits to See in Burlington Before the Summer Ends

Three exhibits are open at the Art Gallery of Burlington on Lakeshore Road, two of them closing within weeks, and a free pop-up show opens at Burlington Centre this weekend.

Celina Eceiza's A material called Earth, Volume 1: The life of corners takes over the Lee-Chin Family Gallery with hand-dyed, stitched and embroidered textiles across the walls, floors and ceilings, next to large-scale drawings. It is a room you walk into rather than look at, with soft sculptures built to hold a body and ceramics pulled from the gallery's own collection storage. It comes down August 16, and the Buenos Aires artist's next volume opens in Halifax in September.

Chukwudubem Ukaigwe's Locutions: Fragments out of a Deluge runs in the Perry Gallery through August 30. The centrepiece is a set of ceramic vessels stacked bowl on bowl, their surfaces swelling and cracking open, with microphones tucked inside playing sounds his siblings recorded in Lagos: market negotiations, communal debate, rain. The vessels sit on secondhand furniture collected locally, a wooden desk, a spinning wheel, a butter churner.

The gallery's Community Generator Series runs alongside both, a rotating set of community-led shows meant to put more local artists in front of more people. It turns over often, so it is worth a look even on a repeat visit.

Free at Burlington Centre

Arts Burlington's all-Guild water show lands at Burlington Centre on Guelph Line from August 1 to 7. It is part of Heritage Week, themed Waterways of Life this year, and it is free with no registration, so you can wander through while you are at the mall.
