🍷 Canadians Drinking Less At Home

THE CANADIAN PRESS / Sammy Kogan
New Statistics Canada data shows liquor store sales declined again in 2025, marking the fourth straight year of falling alcohol purchases. Sales dropped 1.6 per cent despite rising prices, suggesting more Canadians are choosing to cut back.
For one Burlington resident, that shift has been personal. Andrea Pain says she used to constantly debate whether to have a glass of wine at home, describing it as an ongoing internal conversation. Over the past year she made a change, choosing not to keep alcohol at home and saving drinks for social occasions instead.
Pain says the decision brought noticeable benefits, including feeling more productive and present in daily life. She now works as executive director of Moderation Management, a non profit that helps people rethink their relationship with alcohol.
Experts say her experience reflects a broader trend. Researchers note younger adults are drinking less than previous generations, while growing health awareness and rising costs may also be influencing habits. At the same time, recreational cannabis sales in Canada increased by more than six per cent last year, another sign that consumer preferences may be shifting.
🎓 Burlington Students Plan Walkout
Students at Burlington Central High School are planning a walkout this week to protest provincial cuts to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), which helps students pay for college and university through loans and grants.
Organizers say students will leave class at 12:30pm and walk to Burlington City Hall to make their voices heard. The demonstration is part of a province wide student movement involving more than 100 schools, with many students raising concerns about how the funding changes could impact their ability to afford post secondary education.
☕ Free Coffee At Appleby McDonald’s
Did you know the McDonald’s at 2040 Appleby Line, beside the Orchard, recently finished renovations and has reopened to customers?
To celebrate, the location is offering a free medium coffee to residents until the end of the month. If you live nearby or happen to be driving along Appleby Line, it might be a nice excuse to swing by for a quick pick me up.

⚾ Owen Caissie Delivers For Team Canada
Burlington’s Owen Caissie is making an impact with Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic. The young outfielder helped spark an 8-2 win over Colombia on Friday, blasting a two run home run in the second inning to give Canada an early lead.
Caissie followed it up with a double in Saturday’s close 4-3 loss to Panama. Canada continues tournament play this week with an upcoming game against Cuba tonight as the team pushes for a spot in the next round.
🎨 Creative Hive Connects Local Artists
A small group of Burlington creatives is gathering each week through the Creative Community Hive, a pop up art studio designed to bring artists together to create, share ideas, and connect. The sessions offer a relaxed space where people can work on projects while meeting others who enjoy making things.
The group meets Thursdays from 10:30am to 1:30pm at the Orchard Community Hub inside St. Christopher’s Elementary School. Participants bring or use shared supplies for activities like knitting, watercolour painting, crochet, beadwork, and more. Sometimes creativity just needs a place and a few friendly faces to grow.
