🚗 A Competitor to Uber Enters Burlington

If you’ve noticed a new ride-hailing name popping up around Burlington, you’re not imagining it. Hopp has officially rolled into town as part of its expansion across Halton and the wider GTA. The company promises lower fares for riders and better earnings for drivers, aiming to shake up a space long dominated by just a couple of big players.

For locals, it could mean more choice when heading across town or out to neighbouring cities. Hopp says its wider service area helps drivers work more flexibly, while riders benefit from trips that often cost less.

If you find yourself calling a Hopp for a ride, let us know how it goes!

🍽️ A Look Inside 400 Brant

In a recent feature for Burlington local-news.ca, reporter Maisha Hasan takes readers behind the scenes at 400 Brant as Taste of Burlington returned this week, digging into how the restaurant thinks about food, space, and hospitality. She spoke with co-owner Sarah Millar and executive chef Stewart Schmidt about their partnership, the constant adjustments of restaurant life, and how guest feedback even led to changes like improving acoustics in the dining room.

Hasan also explored how the Taste of Burlington menu lets the kitchen step outside its usual playbook, testing new ideas, flavours, and combinations that do not always fit the regular menu. It is a chance for the team to experiment, highlight technique, and give diners something a little unexpected while staying true to the comfort and value they are known for.

🚦 An Attempt to Address Traffic

If you’ve ever been stuck crawling through Burlington while the QEW backs up, you’re not alone. The city is putting together a new Traffic and Road Safety Roundtable to focus on congestion and safety, especially around the Skyway and highway spillover. The goal is to bring together experts, city staff, businesses, and residents to talk through real, workable ideas.

The roundtable is expected to meet starting in February, with recommendations shared publicly once they take shape. There will also be town halls and drop-ins for residents to share their own experiences.

🏨 Layers of History on Brant

Today’s story about 400 Brant got us thinking about just how much history lives inside that corner of downtown. Before it became the Queen’s Head Pub from 2003 to 2023, and before it became today’s impressive restaurant, the building operated as the Queen’s Hotel, owned by R. D. Smith from 1918 to 1936. A Hamilton Radial Electric Railway stop once sat right beside it, where Elgin Street exists today.

That history resurfaced this week on Reddit, where someone shared a photo of the hotel taken more than a century ago. Check out this really cool piece of Burlington history! 👇

🎭 A Love Story Shaped by War

Theatre Burlington is opening its winter season with Mary’s Wedding, a World War I era play that leans into memory, dreams, and the pull between love and duty. The story follows Mary and Charlie, two young people trying to hold onto each other as history intervenes, told through shifting scenes that feel more emotional than literal.

Running through February, the production lands just in time for Valentine’s Day and offers something more reflective than festive. With a small cast and an intimate setting near Central Park, it’s the kind of show that invites you to slow down, listen closely, and leave thinking about how love survives in uncertain times.
