Summer Music Parade Returns 🎶

Image from Burlington.ca

Burlington is bringing back its Father's Day weekend parade tradition with the Summer Music Parade on June 20, kicking off at 10 a.m. downtown. Local groups including the Burlington Teen Tour Band, Junior Redcoats, Top Hat Marching Orchestra, and Halton Police pipes and drums will march from Central Arena down Brant Street to Baldwin Street.

The Teen Tour Band Boosters will be collecting food and donations for the Burlington Food Bank along the route.

After the parade wraps up, the celebration continues at Spencer Smith Park with the free Lakeshore Music and Arts Festival running June 20 to 21, featuring headliners Walk Off the Earth, The Trews, Katie Tupper, and The Dirty Nil.

Library Book Sale Next Week 📚

The Burlington Public Library is bringing back its annual book sale next Saturday, May 30, starting at 9 a.m. at the Central Branch on New Street.

Readers can fill a BPL tote bag with books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines, and board games for $10 if they bring their own bag, or $15 with a new one. Individual books are $1 each, audiovisual items are three for $5, and magazines are four for $1.

All proceeds support the library. This could be the perfect opportunity to stock up your summer reading list for a great price!

The Future of Freeman Station 🚂

Freeman Station Rail Museum

The nine-acre property holding Burlington's 120-year-old Freeman Station rail museum has sold for $2 million, and the new owner has started talks with the city about what comes next for the historic building.

Solenis Canada sold the site at 942 Brant Street earlier this month to a numbered company calling the purchase a long-term investment. The new owners say they're aware of the station's significance and plan to work with the city on its future.

Freeman Station has been closed since May 2023. The city took over the museum last year after dissolving the volunteer group that ran it, and a plan for its future is expected by December 2026.

Arts Funding Doubles For Summer 🎨

MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos

Six cultural events across Burlington and Hamilton are splitting $100,000 in provincial and private funding through a new partnership between Ontario's Cultural Attractions Fund and the Incite Foundation for the Arts.

Two Burlington events made the cut. The Halton Equity Diversity Roundtable gets $10,000 for Pride in Equity on June 19 at the Art Gallery of Burlington. WeDoes Heritage Association gets another $10,000 for the Burlington Latino Festival running June 26 to 28.

The rest goes to four Hamilton events, including AfroJazz Fest in July and the Hamilton Fringe Festival later that month. The funding helps with marketing and promotion, and the loans are partially repayable so the province can reinvest in future cultural projects.

Collaborative Kitchen Feeds Seniors 🍽

Three Halton and Hamilton nonprofits launched Collaborative Kitchen earlier this week, a new program that will deliver ready-to-use fresh food to more than 500 senior households across the region.

Burlington's Food for Life will rescue produce from farms and grocery stores, Neighbour to Neighbour will prep it into ready-to-use ingredients at their Hamilton kitchen, and St. Matthew's House will handle delivery to seniors who struggle with peeling, chopping, or using tools like can openers.

The program was made possible by a $98,300 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant and aims to turn bulk rescued foods like whole squash and fresh peaches into accessible meals year-round.
