Burlington Parents: Your Child’s Swim Skills Are About to Disappear
Winter kills progress. Kids forget. Confidence fades. And when summer hits? Panic.
That’s why Burlington families are locking in winter swim spots at Back to Basics Swim Academy, before they’re gone.
We’re not a chain. We’re local. Small classes. Certified instructors. Warm pools. And lessons that actually work.
Whether your child’s terrified of water or needs to keep leveling up, this is where confidence grows, not resets.
Here’s the deal:
Free trial lesson — no risk, just results
Tiny class sizes — actual attention, real progress
Limited winter spots — filling fast, don’t wait
Water safety isn’t seasonal. Your kid deserves more than splashy chaos.
Spots are going. Fast.
Don’t just take our word for it.

🎸 Burlington’s New Waterfront Festival
For decades, Burlington’s Sound of Music Festival has been a fixture of early summer, drawing huge crowds to the waterfront for four packed days of free music. That era is officially over, and we just got an update on what’s next. The new event, officially named the Lakeshore Music and Arts Festival, will still be free to attend, but is shrinking to just 2 days.
The new Festival will run June 20th and 21st in and around Spencer Smith Park. Plans include three stages, a downtown street festival on Brant Street, food trucks, a licensed area, and space for local artists and vendors. Organizers promise Canadian performers across genres, with a notable headliner each night, plus family programming and a kids zone.
More announcements are expected in the spring, so stay tuned.
💫 Something Strange Over Burlington
Sunday night brought a little mystery to the Burlington sky. Around 7:15 pm, local photographer Christine Poe spotted two glowing objects near the moon while standing at LaSalle Park. The lights, one green and one red, appeared to trail smoke and move slowly upward, lingering long enough to be photographed. The photo was shared on Facebook, and quickly inspired some interesting theories from UFOs to fighter jets.
According to BurlingtonToday, the Burlington Airstrip said it had no information, and the Canadian Space Agency is reportedly looking into it. For now, the sky has gone quiet again, leaving only questions and one very intriguing photo.
🏥 More Funding for Local Hospitals
Hospitals serving Burlington and the wider Halton area are set to receive $4.9 million in provincial funding aimed at cutting wait times for CT scans and surgeries. The investment will increase diagnostic imaging hours and help hospitals complete more procedures during the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Funding will support Joseph Brant Hospital here in Burlington, along with Halton Healthcare Services facilities in Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills. Local leaders say the added capacity should mean faster diagnoses and quicker access to care close to home.

🏆 Burlington Musician Earns JUNO Nomination
The JUNO Awards are Canada’s annual music awards, recognizing artists and albums from across the country in a wide range of genres, and Burlington’s own Chris McKhool has recently earned a 2026 JUNO nomination for Children’s Album of the Year with his album Little Leaf!
McKhool is the frontman of Sultans of String and has been nominated for JUNOs several times before, both with the group and on his own, and was awarded a key to the city of Burlington last April for his musical contributions. The Awards will be held on March 29th in Hamilton, and Burlington will be watching.
⏳ Michael Groat and Early Burlington
Local historian and Burlington Historical Society volunteer Jennifer Kemp traces the life of Michael Groat, an early Black settler whose story reaches back to Burlington’s earliest days. Groat arrived in Upper Canada in 1792 at about age 15, likely as an enslaved household servant. By 1806, he was a free man and purchased 140 acres in what became Brant’s Block directly from Chief Joseph Brant, settling south of today’s Dundas Street along Kerns Road.
Groat also served as a private in the 2nd York Militia during the War of 1812, playing an important role in defending our country. His story, alongside others such as Private Ebenezer Guire, shows how Black residents were part of building Burlington from its earliest days, on the land and on the front lines.
