🎬 A Movie Set Comes to Burlington

Film crews are setting up around Burlington as a new independent movie begins shooting in the city. Cameras have already been spotted near the waterfront, schools, and quiet neighbourhood streets as production gets underway this winter.

The project is an adaptation of The Riverside Strangler, a crime-horror story written by local author Paul Fitzgerald. While part of the film will be shot in Portland, most scenes are being filmed here, turning familiar Burlington spots into a movie set and drawing plenty of curious looks from passersby.

🛒 Giant Tiger Announces Closure

The Giant Tiger store on Guelph Line has announced that it is closing for good, with its final day set for March 7. Shoppers are already seeing empty shelves and storewide discounts, marking the slow wind-down of a place many relied on for affordable basics close to home.

So far no information has been shared about what will happen to the space once the store is gone, leaving neighbours wondering what might replace a long-time fixture in this plaza.

📚 A Library Hold List Battle

A popular TV show has sparked a reading rush at Burlington Public Library. After the hockey drama Heated Rivalry premiered on Crave, locals quickly tracked down the romance novel that inspired it, and discovered there was only one physical copy in the system.

Now, more than 35 readers are waiting their turn. The library has added extra digital copies to keep up, but it’s clear this story has struck a chord well beyond the screen.

👜 A Simple Idea That Keeps Growing

Purses with a Purpose is a Burlington-based donation drive that collects handbags filled with essential items for women in need. Started seven years ago by local volunteers, the campaign runs each fall and supports shelters and agencies across Halton and nearby communities.

This past season, the group filled more than 1,500 purses, beating its goal by a wide margin. Packed with toiletries, warm clothing, and care items, each purse offered practical help and a small reminder that someone in the community is thinking of them.

♿ Downtown Parking, Seen Differently

The City of Burlington is reviewing a set of recommendations aimed at making municipal parking downtown more accessible. Put forward by the Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee, the ideas focus on things like better kiosk placement, clearer routes, and more thoughtful design of accessible spaces.

It’s about noticing the small barriers most people never think twice about. City staff are now weighing what’s workable, with enforcement flagged as a key piece to making any changes actually matter.
