FIFA Fan Experience Next Month 🎉

Burlington is getting its own FIFA World Cup celebration on July 9 as part of Canada Celebrates, a national program bringing World Cup energy to 39 communities across the country. While Toronto and Vancouver host actual matches, the rest of us get a fan experience closer to home.
Spencer Smith Park will turn into a free viewing party starting at 1pm, with a live quarter-final match airing at 4pm. The day includes soccer skills challenges, music, cultural programming, and a beer garden open from noon to 9pm.
The city is encouraging people to take transit or bike to the park given the expected crowd.
Lakeshore Festival Schedule Drops 🎶
The full schedule for Lakeshore Music & Arts Festival is now out, with artists and set times for both stages across the June 20-21 weekend at Spencer Smith Park.
Gates open at 11am both days. Music runs until 10:30pm Saturday and 9:30pm Sunday. Entry is free.
The festival has posted the complete lineup and timing details on their website and socials, something people have been waiting on since the event was announced as Sound of Music's replacement.
Bronte Creek Meadows Moves Forward 🏗
Burlington is moving ahead with plans for a major new community near the entrance to Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The proposed Bronte Creek Meadows development, covering 123.7 hectares at Upper Middle Road and Mainway, could bring around 2,800 jobs and 1,500 to 2,000 new homes to the area in its first phase.
The developer is proposing a cut-through road between Upper Middle and Mainway, along with an extension of Corporate Drive, to handle the expected traffic. The development would sit just behind the currently vacant Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School.
Ward 5 councillor Paul Sharman was praised by colleagues for his work with the community and developers on the project. Council is expected to vote on the amendments June 23.

Aldershot Students Win National Wetlands Award 🏆
(From left) Amelia Gow, Alex McKeown and Kennedy Nadon | Supplied to Burlington Today
Three Grade 11 students from Aldershot School have won a national award for their research on wetland protection. Amelia Gow, Alex McKeown, and Kennedy Nadon took home first place in the Art & Science Competition from the Wetland Centres of Excellence program after presenting to experts from Ducks Unlimited Canada.
The trio tackled a deceptively simple question: is it better to preserve one large wetland or ten smaller ones? They looked at biodiversity, sustainability, and habitat density across the Prairie Pothole region, ultimately concluding that one larger wetland has a slightly greater environmental impact. They were quick to add that the real answer is to save as much wetland as possible.
All three plan to pursue careers in environmental science or engineering after graduating next year.
Navy Bands Play BPAC Thursday 🎶
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is hosting a free concert this Thursday featuring Canada's two Regular Force Navy bands performing together for the first time in decades.
The Stadacona Band and Naden Band, based on opposite coasts, will perform a mix of Canadian hits and popular tracks, along with solo performances and vocal features. The show starts at 7 p.m. on June 18.
