🌅 Horizon 2050: Shaping Burlington’s Next Chapter

Source: burlington.ca
The City has launched Horizon 2050, a long-term plan that looks ahead 25 years to guide how Burlington grows, connects and thrives for future generations. Residents are invited to share their thoughts through an online survey open until Oct. 31 or by attending upcoming community sessions this month, both in-person and virtual.
The plan focuses on key priorities like housing, climate action, inclusion, infrastructure and wellbeing. City leaders say this feedback will directly shape Burlington’s strategic direction for decades to come, ensuring the community’s values and voices are at the heart of every decision.
🌸 New Chapter for Spencer Smith’s Cherry Trees

Source: burlington.ca
Many of us have paused under the soft pink blossoms at Spencer Smith Park, especially during spring’s brief but beautiful bloom. The City has shared that several of those beloved cherry trees, gifted by our twin city Itabashi, Japan, are nearing the end of their natural lifespan and must be removed for safety. Eight trees have already been taken down after careful assessment.
But there’s good news too. Beginning in fall 2026, new cherry trees will be planted alongside an upgraded, more accessible pathway. By 2031, the younger trees will be in full bloom, ensuring Burlington’s cherished spring tradition continues for generations. The City is also exploring heartfelt ways to honour the original trees’ legacy as part of this renewal.
📚 BurlLITFest 2025 Brings Stories to Life
The Burlington Public Library has announced a star-studded lineup for this year’s BurlLITFest, celebrating its fifth anniversary this November. The free, month-long festival welcomes an impressive roster of Canadian and international authors, including Joy Fielding, Miriam Toews, Robert J. Sawyer, and Iona Whishaw, alongside thoughtful speakers like Patty Krawec and Rick Westhead.
From Jane Austen tributes to kids’ writing workshops and the beloved Open Mic finale, there’s truly something for every reader and writer. Registration opens Oct. 15 at noon, and with past events filling up fast, book lovers across Burlington are already marking their calendars for a month brimming with stories, inspiration and community connection.

🎺 Remembering Rob Garnier, the Heart of the Band

Source: burlingtontoday.com
For nearly two decades, Rob Garnier shaped the rhythm and spirit of the Burlington Teen Tour Band, serving as marching director from 1977 to 1995. To hundreds of young musicians, he was more than a leader. He was a mentor, protector, and second father who made sure every member felt seen and supported both on and off the parade route.
Rob’s children, Robyn and Chris, remember a life filled with music, family, and love for community. When the Band played at his celebration of life this September, it was a fitting tribute to the man who marched proudly behind the tubas, always keeping watch. His legacy lives on in every note played, every step taken, and every friendship formed through Burlington’s beloved marching band.
