BYOB this Spring 🍻

Ontario is planning to let people bring their own alcohol to some outdoor cultural and community events, expanding rules that used to apply more narrowly to tailgating at sporting events.

Starting this spring, organizers of things like farmers markets, movie nights, art exhibits, and neighbourhood festivals would be able to apply for BYOB permits. If approved, attendees could drink their own alcohol in designated areas.

The province says municipalities that do not already have bylaws allowing alcohol in public spaces will need to put them in place. The government is pitching the change as a way to support local tourism and boost activity in communities.

Last Call: Key to the City 🗝️

There’s just one week left to nominate someone for Burlington’s Key to the City, one of the city’s highest honours.

The award, launched in 2019 by Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, recognizes people, groups, and organizations who’ve made a real difference locally. That could be through arts, sports, volunteering, advocacy, or anything that’s had a positive impact on the community.

Past recipients include tennis player Victoria Mboko, musician Sarah Harmer, and D-Day veteran Gordon Schottlander.

Nominations close next Tuesday, with recipients set to be honoured at a ceremony on April 15.

A Very Livable City 🏘️

A new ranking of Canada’s best places to live just came out, and Burlington landed right in the top 10.

The study looked at 28 major cities across the country, comparing things like quality of life, safety, salaries, cost of living, and local attractions. The big takeaway is that smaller cities are starting to stand out more than the usual big names.

Burlington came in sixth overall, joining several other Ontario cities that dominated the list.

Places like Barrie, Sudbury, and Oakville also ranked high, while Toronto ended up at the very bottom.

The report suggests what many locals already feel, that you don’t need a huge city to have a great quality of life.

Skate With Local Olympians 🏒

Renata Fast (left) and Emma Maltais

Burlington is hosting a pretty special community skate this weekend, and it’s all about celebrating two local Olympians.

On March 22 at 9:00am, residents can hit the ice with Emma Maltais and Renata Fast at Appleby Ice Centre. Both just returned from the Winter Games, representing Canada and Burlington on the world stage.

It’s a free, drop-in event with no registration needed. There’s a skate with the athletes, followed by an open skate, and then a meet-and-greet with photos and autographs.

If you’ve got skates, just show up and join in. It’s a nice chance to meet some hometown role models and be part of something fun over March Break.
