Help Tell Burlington’s Culinary Past 🍽️
Museums of Burlington is asking residents to help capture the city’s culinary history, but so far, no one has stepped forward.
The team is searching for old menus, photos, memorabilia, and personal stories to build a richer picture of Burlington’s restaurant and food culture over the years.
The effort ties into the upcoming Eat, Make, Share: A Taste of Immigration exhibition, opening April 18 at Joseph Brant Museum and running for nearly five months. It’s a way to make sure Burlington’s favourite food memories, from diners to family traditions, are preserved and shared for the next generation.
Pollinator Kits Bloom 🌼
BurlingtonGreen is helping residents turn their gardens into pollinator havens with $30 native plant kits, designed to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial species. With options for sun, shade, rain gardens, and even monarch-focused kits, the initiative makes it easy to support local biodiversity right at home.
Orders are open now, with pickup set for May 24 from 10am-3:30pm at the BurlingtonGreen Eco Hub near the waterfront.
Wildflower seed packets are also available, offering another simple way to add colour and life to outdoor spaces across the city. A small change in your garden can go a long way for Burlington’s local ecosystem.
Tree Pruning Underway 🌳
Burlington has kicked off its annual tree pruning program, with crews working through Aldershot and the downtown core this week.
Residents may notice workers trimming branches in key areas, including neighbourhoods east of Shadeland and south of Plains, along with parts of downtown west of Brant and south of the QEW.
The program helps keep streets safe by improving sightlines for drivers while also supporting tree health and storm resilience.
The city notes oak trees will not be pruned before Nov. 1 to prevent the spread of disease, an important step in protecting Burlington’s urban canopy.

City-Wide Clean Up Returns 🌱
BurlingtonGreen has launched its annual Community Clean Up, running now through Oct. 31 and inviting residents to help tidy parks, streams, and neighbourhoods across the city.
Since 2011, more than 152,000 participants have taken part, and this year’s goal is to reach 14,000 volunteers in celebration of the organization’s 18th anniversary.
Participants can register their own cleanups and receive free supplies like bags and gloves, with optional initiatives such as the Litter League fundraiser and a cigarette recycling program.
Supported by partners including the City of Burlington and local groups, the program continues to turn small efforts into a cleaner, greener community.
From NHL Ice To BBQ Routes 🏒

Burlington’s Mario Giallonardo is looking back on a hockey career that carried him from junior leagues to a brief but memorable stint in the NHL.
He debuted with the Colorado Rockies in 1980 after being scouted by Don Cherry, who dubbed him “Mario G,” and went on to play over 30 NHL games across two seasons while also competing in strong minor leagues in places like Fort Worth and Toledo.
His path included facing the 1980 U.S. Olympic team in exhibition play, championship runs in the minors, and opportunities that nearly extended overseas before a serious back injury ended his career. Now 68 and living in Burlington, Giallonardo works delivering barbecues, a steady post-hockey chapter that sits alongside decades of stories from a life spent in the game.
