🍽️ Burlington’s Best Hidden Gems

We recently came across a Reddit thread where people are discussing their favourite “hidden gem” restaurants in Burlington and the surrounding area. It’s packed full with recommendations that you might not have heard of before, and is a great resource for date night or your next family outing.

Some of the spots getting lots of love include:

And that’s only a handful. The thread is packed with even more recommendations across Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, and beyond if you’re looking for your next great meal.

🛒 New Costco Opening Delayed

A new anticipated Costco on Wyecroft Road at the edge of Burlington and Oakville is still moving ahead, but the timeline has shifted. A final site plan approval is now in place and demolition is underway, with construction expected this spring. The projected opening has been pushed to fall 2027.

The warehouse near Burloak Drive and the QEW will include over 1,000 parking spaces, including underground spots, accessible spaces, and bike parking. A gas bar is also planned at the northwest corner by South Service Road West and RioCan Boulevard. It is coming, just not as soon as many hoped.

📚 March Break at the Library

March Break is almost here, and Burlington Public Library is preparing for a full week of free programs for kids and families. There’s a mix of registered events and drop-in activities happening across branches, along with March Break Bingo running all week. Kids can grab a card, complete four squares, and return it for a sticker prize while supplies last.

Highlights include Magic Mel’s live magic show, yoga and craft sessions, Nintendo Switch gaming, and plenty of hands-on STEAM activities. Some programs require registration starting February 18, while others are first come, first served. It’s shaping up to be a busy, welcoming week at the library for families across Burlington.

❄️ Taking the Plunge for Local Athletes

The Polar Plunge is heading back to Beachway Park on Sunday, March 8, with dozens of brave volunteers ready to run into Lake Ontario in support of Special Olympics Burlington. The goal this year is $10,000, with about $7,000 already raised. Funds will help send five local athletes to the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat this August, along with six karate athletes to the World Karate Championships in Spain this October.

Organizers say events like this keep their volunteer-run programs going and make national and international competition possible. Residents can register to take the plunge, sponsor a swimmer, donate, or volunteer and help cheer these athletes on as they represent Burlington on bigger stages.

On a similar and icy note…

Most students spend reading week catching up on sleep. Burlington’s Evan Romachyk is spending his at the beach. The second-year Queen’s engineering student has been jumping into the icy water every day, adding one extra second to his plunge for every new Instagram follower he gains. As his audience grows, so does his time in the lake, now pushing past the five-minute mark.

He says the cold helps with focus and energy, and he plans to cap it at 10 minutes once the seconds stack too high. Check out his videos and follow along. ⬇️
