Burlington 65 Years Apart

Burlington’s subreddit has been flooded with old pictures of Burlington recently, including this one of Appleby and Upper middle back in 1960. We put together this before and after for you to see how much has changed in 65 years, it’s pretty incredible to see.

We encourage you to scroll through all of the other posts in the subreddit showing different pieces of Burlington’s history. ⬇️

🎄 From Living Rooms to Living Wetlands

After the holidays, thousands of Christmas trees around Burlington will get a second life at Royal Botanical Gardens. From Dec. 29 to Jan. 11, RBG is collecting real evergreens to help rebuild creeks and stabilize shorelines at Cootes Paradise and along Grindstone and Spencer Creeks.

It’s a simple idea with lasting impact. Those once-festive trees become natural barriers that protect wetlands, encourage new plant growth, and quietly support local wildlife for years to come.

🎅 Santa Lane Brings Neighbours Together

On Myers Lane in Roseland, 16 giant inflatable Santas now line the street, turning an ordinary block into a holiday landmark. What started five years ago as a simple idea between neighbours grew into a tradition built on sharing rides to Costco, helping one another decorate, and welcoming new families in.

Today, kids, seniors, and even school buses make the trip.

🔔 A Milestone Measured in Bells

James O'Brien (left) and his mother, Burlingtontoday

James O’Brien will ring a little louder this week as he marks his 100th volunteer kettle shift with the Salvation Army. What began in 2018 as a nudge from a news story has become a meaningful holiday tradition rooted in family, patience, and showing up when it matters.

For O’Brien, the kettles offer a front-row seat to Christmas, kids dropping in coins, neighbours slowing down, and generosity unfolding in real time across Burlington.
