🎓 Brock University Brings New Energy to Burlington

Source: burlingtontoday.com
The former Robert Bateman High School has found new life as Brock University’s Burlington campus, officially opened this week inside the Robert Bateman Community Centre. Nearly 500 students are already attending classes in teacher education and applied disabilities studies, programs designed to meet local needs and strengthen ties with Burlington schools.
Linked to the New Appleby Library and TechPlace, the space blends modern classrooms, labs, and community areas. Visitors called the transformation inspiring, a symbol of collaboration among governments, educators, and residents. Many hope this new hub will not only foster learning but also spark partnerships and possibilities across Burlington’s growing education community.
🐾 Generous Gift Could Bring New Dog Park to Palmer
A Burlington resident has offered a heartfelt $100,000 donation to create the city’s eighth leash-free dog area, proposed for the southeast corner of Palmer Park. The gift, made in memory of her late husband, would cover most of the project’s cost, with the city contributing the remaining $40,000.
If approved by council next week, the new space would give local pups and their owners a much-needed spot to play and socialize freely. Neighbours say the addition would bring extra life to the park and offer a touching tribute to a beloved community member.
🌳 LaSalle Park Marina Gets a Fresh New Look
The Aldershot BIA is inviting the community to celebrate upgrades at the LaSalle Park Marina, where new accessible seating, bike racks, shade areas, and freshly planted trees now make the waterfront even more welcoming. A public art installation is also in the works to add an extra splash of local character.
Residents can stop by today at 11 a.m. to see the improvements firsthand and share in some cake by the water!

🎀 Burlington Turns Pink for the Run for the Cure

Source: burlingtontoday.com
Downtown Burlington was awash in pink this weekend as 2,800 participants joined the 34th annual CIBC Run for the Cure, raising more than $50,000 for breast cancer research and support. From pipers playing Scotland the Brave to families walking hand-in-hand, the morning was filled with energy and emotion.
Among the crowd were survivors, supporters, and local heroes like Dr. Alexandra Ginty, who helps women heal through post-mastectomy tattoo art. The event served as both a fundraiser and a powerful reminder of hope, strength, and community spirit.
🌲 From Timber to Townhomes: Burlington’s Lumber Legacy

Source: burlingtontoday.com
In the 1800s, Burlington’s economy was rooted in lumber, with mills along Brant and Ontario Streets shaping the town’s early growth. Local pioneers like Allen S. Nicholson modernized the trade by introducing standard-sized windows, revolutionizing building design. Though the sawmills are long gone, companies like Nicholson and Cates kept the legacy alive. Burlington’s homes and neighbourhoods still stand as reminders of a city literally built from its own wood.
This story was researched and written by Jennifer Kemp, a Burlington Historical Society volunteer and lifelong resident with a passion for preserving the city’s history.
