Together With BOMBA

We are looking for new umpires for the upcoming season. If you love baseball and want to stay involved in the game, umpiring is a great way to do it.

Umpiring is open to anyone: players, parents, coaches, fans, or officials from other sports. Many young umpires start around age 12, and it’s an excellent opportunity for teens to earn money while spending time outdoors during the summer.

New umpires receive training through the Ontario Baseball Association, including a short online learning course and an in-person development camp where you’ll learn rules, positioning, signals, and game mechanics. No previous umpiring experience is required!

Entry-level games typically pay $30–$45 per game.

Enjoy the best view of the game, meet new friends, and become part of the local baseball community.

Building Proposed On Brant 🏗️

Rendering of the proposed building | WZMH Architects

A new development proposal on Brant Street is heading to Burlington council next month, and it’s already raising some eyebrows.

The plan calls for an 11-storey rental building with 93 units at 1056–1060 Brant St. That’s notably taller than the six-storey limit currently allowed, and it also includes fewer parking spaces than required under existing rules.

The project does include underground parking and bike spaces, but height and parking have both been sticking points for nearby residents.

Council will review the proposal in April, with a public meeting scheduled for April 14 where residents can weigh in.

Central Library Work Ahead 📚

Burlington’s Central Library could see some temporary closures later this year as a major roof project gets underway.

The work includes replacing parts of the roof, skylights, and several HVAC units at the New Street branch. Construction is expected to start in mid-May and continue through the end of 2026.

Once a contractor is selected in April, library staff will confirm the timeline and figure out how much of the building may need to close, whether that’s certain areas or the entire branch.

The upgrades come after ongoing issues with leaks and aging equipment that have been costly to maintain.

City Funds Local Eco Work 🌱

The City of Burlington is paying BurlingtonGreen $62,000 a year to run environmental programs and events across the community.

The local non-profit delivers things like tree planting, cleanups, workshops, and zero-waste initiatives as part of a formal agreement with the city. In 2025 alone, that included over 21,000 volunteer hours, more than 800 trees planted, and thousands of kilograms of waste kept out of landfill.

BurlingtonGreen also pays rent to the city for its Eco Hub space on Lakeshore Road.

City staff say the partnership helps push forward local climate and sustainability goals, calling the group a key partner in that work.

Art For A Cause 🎨

A local student art show is coming back to Burlington, and it’s doing more than just filling walls with creative work.

Paint the Town returns March 26 at Burlington Central High School, where students will showcase and auction off artwork based on this year’s theme, Enchanted.

The event started as a way for students to share their art, but it’s also grown into a fundraiser. Since partnering with Halton police and the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, it’s raised nearly $17,000 for mental health and addiction programs.

The evening runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with the public invited to stop by, check out the art, and support the cause.

Aldershot’s Go To Bistro 🍽️

West Plains Bistro has become a familiar spot in Aldershot for people looking for a reliable meal with a bit of variety.

The restaurant is now run by Ed and Sarah Catley, longtime Burlington owners who took it over in 2023. Since then, they’ve updated the space and leaned into a menu that changes with the seasons.

Alongside that, there’s a feature board that can shift week to week or even daily, giving the chefs room to bring in different flavours and ideas.

With everything made fresh to order and a steady base of regulars, it’s the kind of place people tend to come back to.
