World of Threads Festival Brings 192 Artists to Oakville
The Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre in Oakville has been turned into one large exhibition space for fibre and textile art, and walking in costs nothing. The World of Threads Festival is showing work by 192 artists from 22 countries until January 17, with free parking at the venue.
Water Stories, the festival's major group exhibition, fills the main gallery and the corridor gallery beside it. Five more group shows run alongside: Across Time: Heritage and Tradition, Nature Reclaimed, In the Round for three-dimensional work, War and Displacement, and Cat Walk IV for fashion and wearable art.
Beyond those, there are 44 solo exhibitions, 19 installations of large-scale and wall-based work, and another 48 artists showing individual pieces. Some of the work uses traditional technique and some is experimental, with themes of identity, history, nature, fashion and social issues.
Gareth Bate and Dawne Rudman curate the festival, a not-for-profit charity run by a team of volunteers. The exhibitions opened September 23, and the official opening reception is Saturday, September 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.
