Work Starts on the Spencer Smith Park Cherry Tree Path Extension

The fenced-off stretch of Spencer Smith Park is the start of a longer path under the cherry trees. Construction began Monday, September 28, on an extension that will be four metres wide in concrete, picking up where the existing walkway ends alongside Lakeshore Road.

Crews are also taking out nine invasive trees, including Tree of Heaven, mulberry and Norway maple. In spring 2027 the City will plant 18 new cherry trees along the new stretch of path.

The older trees get their turn in 2031. That is when the City plans to remove and replace any of the existing Sakura cherries in decline and rebuild the original path underneath the blossoms, all part of the cherry tree pathway renewal project.

What happens when

Now: a four-metre-wide concrete path extension goes in and nine invasive trees come out. Spring 2027: 18 new cherry trees planted along the extension. 2031: declining Sakura cherries replaced and the original path rebuilt.
