Handbuilding Pottery - 3 week mini course
Handbuilding is a pottery technique where clay is shaped by hand rather than on a potter's wheel. This method allows for greater creativity and freedom through techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab-building. The course focuses on creating functional ware—pieces that are both beautiful and practical for everyday use.
The course covers an introduction to clay and its properties, essential handbuilding techniques (pinching, coiling, and slab building), and creating functional pieces like bowls, jugs, mugs, and plates. Instruction also includes surface decoration techniques: textures, stamping, transfers, sgraffito, and glazing.
Suitable for complete beginners, ages 16 and up. No prior experience is needed.
Clay, tools, glazes, and kiln firings are included.
Wear an apron or old t-shirt and bring a towel. Avoid jewelry and long nails, as they can interfere with handbuilding.
Pieces are typically fired during the course. Finished works can be collected during sessions or after the course ends. Participants will be notified by email when pieces are ready for pickup.
