Textures of Twilight

A special evening of Indian classical music in the intimate setting of St. John’s Anglican Church in Burlington presented by The Raga Fellowship, in partnership with Saffron Strings and Small World Music.

Textures of Twilight brings together sitar and voice in a double-bill featuring master musicians Abhik Mukherjee and Samarth Nagarkar, who bring their distinctive approaches to raga and improvisation.

Part One: Sitar Recital
The evening opens with highly regarded New York-based sitarist Abhik Mukherjee, whose music is rooted in the Vilayat Khan tradition. Known for his expressive and nuanced playing, Abhik will be accompanied by Toronto tabla maestro Ravi Naimpally.

Part Two: Khayal Vocal
The second half turns to voice with acclaimed khayal vocalist Samarth Nagarkar. Drawing from the Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur traditions, Samarth brings together depth, spontaneity and exploration as each raga develops in the moment.

He will be joined by Sushant Anantharam on harmonium and Zaheer-Abbas Janmohamed on tabla. Together, the two performances offer different expressions of the same musical tradition - first through the resonance of the sitar, then through the richness of the human voice.

At the heart of both is what makes Indian classical music so compelling live: improvisation, conversation between musicians, and music that takes shape in the room. Set within the historic carpenter-Gothic surroundings of St.

John’s, the evening is designed as an intimate encounter with the music, whether Indian classical music is already familiar to you or you are experiencing it for the first time. The sanctuary has limited seating. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended.
